Understanding Ticket Age in KDS

What is Ticket Age?

Ticket Age is a visual notification system that helps kitchen staff prioritize orders based on how long they have been in the queue. As tickets remain in the system, their appearance changes, making it easier to identify which orders need immediate attention.

How Ticket Age Works

The system uses color-coded visual indicators to signal ticket priority based on time thresholds:

  • Color Changes – As tickets age, they automatically transition between different color palettes to provide a clear visual indication of their urgency.
  • Blinking – For urgent tickets, a blinking effect can be enabled when they reach certain thresholds.
  • Bump States – Tickets that reach critical age thresholds can trigger bump states, applying special formatting to highlight their urgency.

Setting Up Ticket Age Thresholds

Each age threshold can be configured with the following settings:

Name – A descriptive label for the threshold (e.g., "On Time," "Delayed," "Critical").
Age – The time (in seconds) at which the threshold is reached.
Default Color Palette – The colors applied to tickets at this age.
Blink Color Palette – (Optional) A blinking effect for urgent tickets.
Order Method Filters – Specifies which order types the threshold applies to.

Order Method Filtering

You can configure age thresholds to apply only to specific order methods, ensuring different service types have appropriate timing expectations:

  • Dine-in orders may have a different priority than takeout orders.
  • Drive-thru orders typically require faster processing than delivery orders.
  • Special events may require custom timing rules.

Bump States

Each age threshold can be set to trigger bump states, which:

✔ Are activated when tickets reach certain conditions or stations.
✔ Apply special color palettes to make urgent tickets stand out.
✔ Can be prioritized in sequence to create escalating visual alerts.

Best Practices

Create Meaningful Thresholds – Set thresholds that align with your kitchen’s workflow and timing expectations.
Use Distinct Colors – Select easily distinguishable color palettes.
Consider Order Types – Different service methods may require different timing settings.
Test Your Configuration – Ensure the age thresholds provide clear visual cues without becoming distracting.

By effectively configuring Ticket Age thresholds, kitchen staff can quickly identify which orders need immediate attention, enhancing efficiency and improving customer satisfaction.
