The Kitchen Display System (KDS) offers a variety of station configuration options to customize how orders are displayed, processed, and managed across different kitchen stations. This guide explains each option and its impact on kitchen workflow.
Basic Station Options
Bump Settings
- Bump From All Stations? – When enabled, bumping an item from this station will bump it from all stations. Useful for expo stations that need to clear tickets across the entire kitchen.
- Require Selection to Bump? – Forces users to select a ticket before bumping, preventing accidental bumps.
- Prioritize Tickets with All Items Bumped? – Highlights tickets where all items have been bumped by other stations. For example:
- A burger is bumped from the grill station.
- Fries are bumped from the fry station.
- The expo station sees the ticket prioritized, indicating it’s ready to be served.
- Require All Ticket Items to Be Bumped Before Expo Can Bump? – Prevents expo stations from bumping tickets until all items have been bumped by their respective preparation stations.
Display Options
- Print Ticket After Bump – Automatically prints a ticket when it’s bumped from this station.
- Play Notify Sound on Incoming Ticket – Plays an alert sound when new tickets arrive.
- Force Focus Capture (Advanced) – Ensures the KDS window remains active, useful for dedicated KDS terminals.
- Hide Seat Display – Removes seat numbers from the ticket display.
- Prefix Seat Display – Adds a prefix to seat numbers for clearer identification.
Order Method Filtering
- Do Not Show Items Delivered via the Following Methods (Filtered Out) – Prevents tickets from specified order methods from appearing at this station (e.g., filtering out Delivery orders at preparation stations).
- Non-Filtered Methods – Displays which order methods will be shown on this station.
Ticket Retention
- Minutes to Keep Bumped Tickets – Determines how long bumped tickets remain in the recall buffer before being permanently removed.
Bump Bar Configuration
The KDS Bump Bar allows for keyboard shortcuts to perform common actions efficiently:
- Bump (B) – Bumps the selected ticket.
- Recall (R) – Recalls the most recently bumped ticket.
- Toggle (T) – Toggles between different views.
- View Swap (S) – Swaps between normal and recall modes.
- Print (P) – Prints the selected ticket.
- Down (D) – Moves selection down.
- Up (U) – Moves selection up.
View Activation
- Activate View 1/2/3 – Quickly switch between different configured views.
- Next View (N) – Cycles to the next view.
Ticket Header/Footer Customization
You can customize ticket headers and footers to show key order details:
✔ Header Left – Typically shows order method and order ID.
✔ Header Right – Often displays the ticket age.
✔ Footer Left – Usually shows the server’s name.
✔ Footer Right – Commonly shows the table number.
Best Practices
Expo Station Configuration:
✔ Enable "Prioritize tickets with all items bumped".
✔ Set appropriate "Minutes to Keep Bumped Tickets" (typically 180-360 minutes).
✔ Consider enabling "Print Ticket After Bump" for paper backup.
Preparation Stations (Grill, Fry, etc.):
✔ Filter order methods relevant to that station.
✔ Set shorter "Minutes to Keep Bumped Tickets" (typically 60-180 minutes).
✔ Enable "Play Notify Sound on Incoming Ticket" for awareness.
Header/Footer Configuration:
✔ Use a consistent header/footer layout across stations for staff familiarity.
✔ Include critical information like order type, ticket age, and identifiers.
By properly configuring these station options, you can optimize kitchen workflow, reduce errors, and improve service times.
