Overrides

Overrides

The Kitchen Display System (KDS) allows you to customize how different items and modifiers appear on the screen. Overrides are a powerful feature that let you highlight specific items or modifiers with custom colors, making them stand out for kitchen staff.

Types of Overrides

The system supports several types of overrides:

Item Overrides – Change how specific menu items appear
Modifier Overrides – Change how specific modifiers appear
Modifier Mod Overrides – Special handling for modifier modifications (e.g., negations or special instructions)

Setting Up Overrides

Item Overrides

Item overrides allow you to assign specific foreground (text) and background colors to particular menu items.

Steps to Configure Item Overrides

  1. Navigate to the "Item Overrides" tab
  2. Select an item from the "All Items" dropdown
  3. Choose the desired foreground (text) and background colors
  4. Click "Add" to apply the override

Use Case:

  • Highlighting important items such as allergens or special preparations

Modifier Overrides

Modifier overrides work similarly but apply to modifiers (e.g., “extra cheese” or “no onions”).

Steps to Configure Modifier Overrides

  1. Navigate to the "Modifier Overrides" tab
  2. Select a modifier from the "All Mods" dropdown
  3. Choose the desired foreground (text) and background colors
  4. Click "Add" to apply the override

Modifier Mod Overrides

This special type of override is particularly useful for handling negations or special instructions.

Steps to Configure Modifier Mod Overrides

  1. Navigate to the "Modifier Mod Overrides" tab
  2. Select from the list of overridden modifiers
  3. Adjust the foreground and background colors as needed

Use Cases

1. Highlighting Allergens

Use bright red backgrounds for items containing common allergens:
✔ Set an override for "Contains Nuts" with a red background
✔ Set an override for "Gluten Free" with a green background

2. Emphasizing Special Instructions

Make important modifiers stand out:
✔ Set "NO" modifiers to appear in red text
✔ Set "EXTRA" modifiers to appear in bold blue text

3. Prioritizing Preparation

Highlight items that need immediate attention:
✔ Set "RUSH" items with a yellow background
✔ Set "WELL DONE" items with a distinct color

Best Practices

Use Consistent Colors – Develop a color system that your kitchen staff can easily recognize
Don't Overuse – Too many different colors can cause confusion
Consider Visibility – Ensure text remains readable against the background colors
Test in Kitchen Lighting – Colors may appear differently under kitchen lighting conditions

Troubleshooting

If your overrides aren’t displaying correctly:

Check that the ticket view is configured to use overrides
Restart the KDS application after making significant changes

By effectively using overrides, you can create a more efficient kitchen display system that helps staff quickly identify important information and prioritize their work.
