Item Add Mode

Item Add Mode

Overview

Item Add Mode is a configuration setting in the Kitchen Display System (KDS) that determines how new items are handled when added to an order. This setting impacts the visual representation and organization of tickets on the display.

Item Add Modes

The KDS offers two primary Item Add Modes:

1. Modify Ticket (Default Mode)

In Modify Ticket mode, when new items are added to an existing order:

  • The new items are inserted directly into the existing ticket.
  • Added items are visually highlighted using the configured "Add" colors.
  • Kitchen staff can easily identify new additions to an order.
  • The ticket remains consolidated as a single entity.

Benefits:

✔ Keeps all items for the same order together.
✔ Provides a clear visual indication of newly added items.
✔ Maintains the full context of the complete order.

2. New Ticket Mode

In New Ticket mode, when new items are added to an existing order:

  • A separate ticket is created for the new items.
  • The new ticket maintains a reference to the original order.
  • Multiple tickets can exist for the same order, each representing a different submission time.

Benefits:

✔ Clearly separates new items from the original order.
✔ Helps track when items were added.
✔ Useful for timing the preparation of items added later.

Visual Indicators

Regardless of the selected Item Add Mode, the KDS provides visual indicators to help kitchen staff identify changes:

  • Added items: Highlighted using the configured "Add" colors (background, foreground, and border).
  • Modified items: Highlighted using the configured "Change" colors.
  • Deleted items: Can be shown with strikethrough text and custom colors.

Configuration

To configure Item Add Mode in the Ticket View settings:

  1. Navigate to the Configuration menu.
  2. Select Ticket Views.
  3. Choose the Ticket View you want to modify.
  4. Locate the "Item Add Mode" setting.
  5. Select either "Modify Ticket" or "New Ticket".

Best Practices

  • For most restaurants: The default "Modify Ticket" mode works well as it keeps all items for an order together.
  • For high-volume operations: "New Ticket" mode may be preferred to help staff distinguish between original orders and additions.
  • Consider your kitchen workflow when selecting the appropriate mode.
  • Test both modes to determine which works best for your operation.

Related Settings

The Item Add Mode works in conjunction with other display settings:

  • Color Palettes for added/modified items.
  • Ticket View Display Modes.
  • Age Thresholds for ticket timing.

By selecting the right Item Add Mode, you can enhance kitchen efficiency, improve order accuracy, and streamline workflow management.
